This is the first part of how I designed the snow globes and the overall sketch of my Trapped In A Dream illustration for the online gloomy challenge.
The inspiration behind this was the many snow globes at the end scene of the movie Krampus; all the different houses and families he had taken prisoner because they were naughty on Christmas. It kind of made me think that they were all trapped in their own nightmares, so to speak. And, going off of the main family seen in the movie, the nightmare would be spending eternity in the same house as your relatives that you hate to love or love to hate.
The figures in the more clear snow globes represent different forms of our "dreams" or, things that trap us within themselves. The man appears to be either falling or jumping, reflecting how many of us can sometimes never tell whether we're coming or going in our lives. The brain symbolizes how we can become trapped inside our own minds; either too wrapped up in fantasies and daydreams or too obsessed with ourselves or everything in the world all at once, never taking a break and just "smell the roses" so to speak.
The money, naturally, references how we all, more than we should, become trapped by money and the "dreams" it promises us, and the "nightmares" it ends up putting us through. The universe, similar to the brain, represents how many of us can feel trapped by everything around us. We feel the weight of the world, so to speak, on our shoulders.
The two smaller snow globes in the foreground were not meant to truly represent anything, just my playing around with different tools that I had yet to really play with. And the overall placement of the detailed globes was just meant to add a bit of balance to the overall piece.
My next video will focus on the line work, color and finishing touches.
